Lithium-ion batteries

Interesting story today in your "industry news" area about the truck in DEnmark using li-ion. I've heard plenty of horror stories about exploding laptops using these batts a few years ago, but apparently the technology's improving if this is correct.

I'm curious if anyone here in the states is making any headway on this? I heard there's a guy in Arizona who's building a car using thousands of li-ion laptop batts but I can't seem to find anything else on that.
